For Croatians, fishing has not only been a food source, but also an important part of their cultural identity. As a company from Zadar that has been manufacturing fishing equipment since 1961, we are proud to be part of this tradition. In this blog, we will go through key moments in the history of fishing in the Adriatic, with a special emphasis on Zadar, which has always been an important center of fishing life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The beginnings of fishing: From the Stone Age to the arrival of the Croats<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Fishing is one of the oldest human activities. Archaeological findings show that people were fishing as early as the Stone Age, using simple tools such as stone hooks and nets. Cavemen made hooks from stone, and later materials such as bone, wood and metal were used. In the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, fishing became as important as hunting land animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the area of \u200b\u200bpresent-day Croatia, fishing developed along rivers and lakes, and after the arrival of the Croats on the Adriatic in the early 7th century, adaptation to sea fishing was a natural step. The Croats brought experience from their ancestral homeland, but they also quickly adopted techniques from the natives of the Adriatic coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Zadar: The cradle of Croatian fishing<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Zadar holds a special place in the history of Croatian fishing. In 995, the <strong>oldest document on Croatian fishing<\/strong>, known as the <strong>Grant of the Zadar Nobles<\/strong>, was issued in Zadar. It mentions the transfer of rights to the fishing sea around the island of Molat and in the Tela\u0161\u010dica Bay to the monastery of St. Chrysogonus. This document, written in Latin, is the first mention of Croats as fishermen and evidence of their connection with the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Interestingly, some toponyms from the grant, such as <strong>Magrovica<\/strong> and <strong>Citorija<\/strong>, have survived to this day, which testifies to the continuity of the fishing tradition in this area. Although Darovnica dates back to the 10th century, Croats were engaged in fishing much earlier, since their arrival on the Adriatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">During the reign of the Croatian king Dr\u017eislav, Zadar was an important center of fishing and maritime trade. The Venetian doge Peter II Orseolo tried to weaken Croatian power at sea, but the Croats managed to maintain their fishing and maritime identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fisherman's Literature: Hektorovi\u0107's \"Fishing and Fisherman's Complaint\"<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">One of the most interesting monuments of fishing history is <strong>\u201cFishing and Fishermen's Complaint\u201d<\/strong>, a work by <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Petar_Hektorovi\" target=\"_self\">Petar Hektorovi\u0107<\/a> from the 16th century. Hektorovi\u0107, a Stari Grad nobleman, described his three-day fishing adventure with two fishermen, Paskoje Debelja and Nikola Zet. This work, written in verse, is not only a literary masterpiece, but also the oldest description of fishing among Croats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hektorovi\u0107's verses provide insight into fishing techniques, the tools fishermen used, and everyday life at sea. This work testifies to the deep connection people have with the sea and fishing, which has lasted for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fishing in modern times<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Over the centuries, fishing has evolved with the advancement of technology. In the Middle Ages, fishing was in the hands of the privileged classes, but it gradually spread to all coastal communities. In the 17th and 18th centuries, scientists such as <strong>Linn\u00e9<\/strong> began to classify fish, which contributed to a better understanding of marine ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 20th century, fishing experienced a real revolution. The production of modern fishing tools, such as nets, hooks and boats, enabled more intensive and efficient fishing. The fishing community in Zadar continues to preserve old customs, but at the same time adapts to the demands of modern fishing.
